About A+ College Ready
Following a highly competitive application process, the A+ Education Partnership in collaboration with Governor Bob Riley, the Alabama Department of Education, AMSTEC and The Alabama Power Foundation secured a multi-million dollar grant from the National Math and Science Initiative (NMSI) to expend and strengthen math, science, and English Advanced Placement (AP) programs in Alabama.
The grant will provide up to $13.2 million over the next six years to help fund a training and incentive program for Pre-AP and AP teachers, students, and administrators. Research demonstrates that students who have access to strong Advanced Placement programs are more prepared to do college level work.
Central to the grant intiative is the development of a new division of A+ Education Partnership called A+ College Ready. A+ College Ready is partner with 12 high schools in Montgomery and Jefferson County the first year to implement a variety of AP expansion strategies. After demonstrating success in the pilot, the program will be expanded to additional districts and schools across the state.
AP expansion strategies that will be implemented include extensive formal and informal training of teachers, additional time on task for students, financial incentives based on academic results, and cultivation of Lead Teachers to support the program in their schools and mentor other teachers. A pre-AP supplemented curriculum will also be implemented in feeder middle schools.
A+ College Ready will build on the foundation of existing statewide AP efforts including the state-funded AP initiative, a grant from the National Governors Association, and AP courses delivered through ACCESS distance learning.
